ABC Signature to Develop Al Sharpton's Biopic Series with Anthony Anderson in Talks to Star

According to Deadline, there's an exciting development in the works at ABC Signature that's drawing quite a bit of attention. They've snagged the rights to the recent Esquire profile, "The Redemption of Al Sharpton," penned by Pulitzer Prize-winner Mitchell S. Jackson. The plan? To turn it into a gripping limited series that delves into the complex life of civil rights activist Al Sharpton.
Now, while no talent is officially attached just yet, there’s strong buzz around Anthony Anderson stepping into Sharpton’s shoes. Not only might Anderson star as the charismatic leader, but he's also lined up to executive produce the project through his Just a Kid from Compton Productions. Joining him behind the scenes are Evi Regev and E. Brian Dobbins of Artists First, with Mitchell S. Jackson himself getting a nod as a producer.
This series looks to explore the dual sides of Sharpton that Jackson captured in his profile. You know, the revered civil rights beacon on one hand, and on the other, the guy who’s often seen as a controversial figure surrounded by equally controversial allies. It’s a deep dive into what drives Sharpton, following him around the country to paint a fuller picture of where he stands in history.
Sharpton isn't new to the spotlight, having made his mark on the national political scene as far back as the 1990s with runs for mayor of New York City, U.S. Senator from New York, and even a shot at the U.S. presidency in 2004. Despite his share of controversies, former President Barack Obama has praised Sharpton, calling him a "voice for the voiceless" and a "champion for the downtrodden."
As for Anthony Anderson, he's no stranger to the screen or behind-the-scenes action. With 11 Emmy nods from his time on ABC’s "black-ish," hosting duties at the Emmys and on Fox's game show "We Are Family," and his work on his Apple travel reality series, Anderson’s got the chops to bring some serious depth to the portrayal of Sharpton. He’s even been dabbling in the detective world again as Detective Kevin Barnard on the 21st season of "Law and Order."
So, keep your eyes peeled. This project is still in the early stages, but it promises to offer a unique glimpse into the life of one of America’s most enduring and enigmatic figures, bringing a mix of drama, history, and a bit of controversy right to our screens.
